About The Race:
The Chill is our “just for fun” race of the series. It is a low cost, high fun race to give racers a chance to get out and do something between the big holidays when there is a lack of other events going on. Designed for beginner to advanced sprint competitors, the December Chill will compress a one-day long adventure race into 7 hours. No support crew will be needed. Teams will be required to navigate each stage of the race using provided pre-marked topographical maps. Each team will be issued a passport that will be punched at designated control points along the way. Look for more info about the race as December draws near.
Racer Check In Information & Directions:
The start and finish will take place in Island Lake Rec Area. For a information on the park click here, and for a park map click here.
More details of registration and check-in will be announced as the race nears.
Trekking / Trail Running / Orienteering: The total on foot will be between 4 - 10 miles - more depending on the selected route. The terrain will vary from trails to dense brush. However, with the winter season, you can expect the forest to be mostly open. You will of course see our standard O-course style orienteering in the event. Navigation will be on pre-marked 1:24,000 scale maps.
Canoe:
Teams will be paddling 4-6 miles depending on their route. Teams are responsible for their own canoes, paddles (standard or kayak), and PFDs. Heavner Canoe Livery will be providing a pickup and delivery service to the race site. Heavner's will take all reservations through e-mail. Please email them, alanheavner@heavnercanoe.com, to reserve your equipment. You may also see their website at www.heavnercanoe.com or call (248) 685-2379 with questions.
Sponsors:
Be sure to visit and support our sponsors as a way of thanking them for supporting us.
Canoes must be open bowed and have two or more actual seats. And a newly adopted rule: Canoes may have a maximum length of 19 feet with a minimum width following the ratio of 0.1625 x length. (For example if your boat is 18 ft long it must be at least 35 inches wide. See equipment heading under our race rules, or click here, for the full rule.)Two person teams will paddle in one canoe. Solo racers will paddle in a kayak. The basic requirements for a kayak are that it be a closed cockpit, not inflatable, and not a sit-on-top. Standard sea kayaks, usually around 12-17 feet, with closed cockpits are fine. Check with race staff if you still have questions about your boat being acceptable. In the event that it is too cold for the canoeing stage, it will be replaced with an adequate backup stage with more trekking or biking.
Mountain Bike:
The mountain bike stage(s) will be fast and fun at 10-15 miles in length. Teams must locate and check in at each of the required checkpoints. The course will include predominantly single track, with some dirt and paved roads as well.
Fixed Ropes:
We will have one fixed ropes section. It will most likely be a fun zip line. All equipment will be provided for ropes sections. No special certificates or skill will be required. They will designed for you to have fun!
